MODIFIED LICENSE PLATES

MONTANA

Montana drivers with disabilities are eligible to receive a modified license plate or a placard to use while driving in order to make parking more efficient. Only those drivers who are permanently disabled may receive a modified license plate for a vehicle they operate directly or a blue and white placard for use in other vehicles. A red and white placard is available for people with temporary disabilities which is hung in the person’s vehicle.

In order to receive either a modified license plate or a placard, you must complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out an application stating your disability and have it certified by your physician. Applications may be obtained from the following sources:
  2. Return the completed application to your county motor vehicle office or the Montana DMV.

Your modified license plate or placard will be sent to you upon completion of the application process.

Cost of the modified license plates are equal to the cost of regular license plates and need to be renewed yearly.

Placards are free of cost and need to be renewed every three years. Renewal for placards requires the completion of a new application.

NORTH DAKOTA

North Dakota residents may receive modified license plates if their disability is permanent and non-reversible. If the disability is permanent but reversible, the driver must have a physician complete a new application yearly in order to receive modified license plates. Modified license plates must be used on the vehicle that the person with a disability directly operates. If the person with a disability is a rider in a vehicle they are eligible for a placard.

In order to receive either a modified license plate or a placard, you must complete the following steps:

Processing of the application takes approximately two weeks. After that time the modified plates will be mailed to the driver’s residence.

Cost of modified license plates is a one-time fee of $5. Plates are to be renewed yearly. Cost of placards is $3 and must be renewed every three months.

SOUTH DAKOTA

South Dakota drivers with a disability are able to receive modified license plates for a vehicle they directly operate or a placard to use when being transported by another driver.

Steps to obtaining modified license plates or placards are as follows:

Cost of placards and modified license plates is free of charge. Placards are to be renewed every five years and modified plates are to be renewed every year. Cost of renewal is free of charge.

WYOMING

Wyoming citizens with disabilities are able to receive a modified license plate for a vehicle they directly operate or a placard to place in a vehicle they are riding in.

Steps to obtaining a modified license plate or a placard:

  1. Fill out an application and have it signed by your physician stating  your disability. 
  2. Return the completed application to your local driver's license office.

Payment is made to the driver's license office for either placards or modified plates and a receipt is given. Placards are received at the driver's license office.Take your receipt to your local county treasurer's office who will issue your modified plates to you at that time.

Renewal for modified plates is yearly. Cost information may be obtained from you local driver's license office.
