Perske, R. (2000). Deception in the interrogation room: Sometimes tragic for persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Mental Retardation, 38 (6), 532-537.

In this article, Perske outlines specific interrogation techniques used by police detectives. While some of these techniques are somewhat manipulative, they can serve a useful purpose when dealing with suspects who have normal intellectual capacity. Howev er, because people with mental retardation are increasingly present in the community, there is increased risk of these techniques leading to coerced, false confessions. Perske emphasizes the need for human service agencies and police department to work to gether to identify effective interrogation techniques for people with intellectual disabilities.
