One Hundred Years

On May 2, 1904, the state opened the doors of the North Dakota Institution for Feeble Minded. This facility was the state's first effort to provide a system of services of supports for persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. In the past 100 years, service providers have developed a set of community services to support persons with developmental disabilities throughout the state.

One Hundred Years chronicles the programs, people, and events that shaped the institution and residents at the North Dakota Developmental Center. Dr. Askvig has examined over 10,000 pages of historical documents on the institution and paints a broad canvas of the people and activities of the Developmental Center.
