Community Staff
Training Program
2004















The North Dakota Statewide MR/DD Training Program has been structured in such a way as to provide career ladder growth opportunities to direct service staff who have the desire and the willingness to develop professionally. Seven levels of competency-based training are recognized in the mental retardation / developmental system.
These are:

Level I


Orientation Training
Community Service Providers are to provide in-service training to full-time direct service staff, prior to the staff members' assuming direct responsibility for the individuals they serve. Although not required, the agency is encouraged to consider this r equirement in whole or in part for direct service staff who are part-time or relief.

Level II


Position-Based Competency
Position-Based Competency is required of all positions in agencies serving individuals with mental retardation-developmental disabilities. The executive director in cooperation with the staff trainer, must develop job descriptions for each position, stati ng the competencies necessary for an individual to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Level III


Certificate of Completion
A certificate of completion is issued to staff members who successfully meet the competencies established for the certificate by the Department of Human Services. The certificate requires successful completion of nine core modules, five elective modules, and a course of supervised field experiences. The agency selects electives from the curriculum based on a staff member's specific hob responsibilities. Core modules are identified by one asterisk (*) and elective modules are identified by two asterisks (* *) . Staff must complete practica which correspond to the core and elective modules submitted for their certification.

Level IV


Advanced Certification
Staff members of agency organizations who have already acquired the certificate of completion have the option to pursue the advanced certification program. The certification consists of 10 additional modules dealing with a variety of training issues inclu ding : aging issues, communication, leisure, behavior management, traumatic brain injury, and basic health. Staff members who successfully complete the advanced certification requirements are issued an additional certificate.

Level V


Associate of Science with emphasis in DD
Minot State University will award the Associate of Science with emphasis in Developmental Disabilities upon satisfactory completion of the designated 27 SH of developmental disabilities coursework and 38 SH of general education coursework. The A.S. degree coursework is available to personnel employed in approved residential and day programs serving persons with mental retardation/developmental disabilities. North Dakota's network of DD Service providers. Others may participate in the training through Minot State University Online.

Level VI


Bachelor of Science in Developmental Disabilities (Non-Teaching)
Individuals who desire to pursue a B.S. in Developmental Disabilities (non-teaching) after completion of the Associate of Science degree in Developmental Disabilities must confirm with Minot State University their intent to attend the university and earn a B.S. in Developmental Disabilities. The student must fulfill all requirements for the degree as specified by Minot State University. Department of Communication Disorders and Special Education.

Level VII


Master of Science in Special Education
Individuals may earn an M.S. degree in Special Education at Minot State University after successful completion of a graduate course of study in the Severely Multi-Handicapped. Anyone interested in pursuing the master's program should contact the Department of Special Education or the Graduate School Office. Minot State University Graduate School.
