Remote Realtime Online Captioning

The service works simply. The speaker (teacher, lecturer, presenter) uses a microphone (wireless or not, depending on the application) which transmits audio to a computer. The computer digitizes the audio and transmits it over the Internet to a remote captionist who transcribes it and sends it back to the presentation location where it is projected on the user's computer screen. This system allows words spoken to be immediately translated into print for the user, hence the term "Realtime".

BASIC RROC SERVICES

All RROC services provide realtime text displays at the event's location. There are two basic types of services.

Remote Verbatim Captioning:  Verbatim Captioning is transcribed, word for word, by a certified remote captionist. The text is displayed in realtime (2 second delay) on a computer screen at the location of the event. After the presentation, transcripts can be emailed to the user.

Remote Note-taking:  Remote Note-taking is an attractive option for people not interested in verbatim transcript. This service sends a sound feed of the event to a professional note taker, who types notes that immediately appear at the user's location. As with Verbatim Captioning, a transcript can be emailed to the user.

DIRECT SERVICES (Available from NDCPD)

RROC Hosting Agreement: Under this agreement, clients manage their own RROC business through a server maintained by NDCPD. Clients are provided with RROC Captioning and Viewer software, initial orientation, ongoing technical assistance, and unlimited access to the RROC scheduling server. Hosting Agreements can be established with no up-front fees and expense is simply based on server usage. Server usage, of course, generates RROC service and consequent revenue. If you’re interested in providing captioning services, don’t want to spend most of your time traveling, don’t want to be limited by distance, or even if you simply have a staff that needs a good tool for delivering service, an RROC Hosting Agreement might be your solution.

Remote Note-taking:   Remote Note-taking services are available directly from NDCPD. Note-taking provides a summarized presentation of the speaker’s important points at a fraction of the cost incurred with Verbatim Captioning. NDCPD’s note takers are professionals that comply with stringent standards and whose employment is based on academic, professional, and communications qualifications. Ongoing training is provided to ensure up-to-date skills and professionalism. If you need quality captioning services, have limited funds and/or don’t require Verbatim Captioning; Remote Note-taking may be your solution.

*NDCPD no longer provides Verbatim Captioning directly. Verbatim Captioning is provided by our “hosting” clients, so we have chosen not to be in competition with them. If looking for direct Verbatim RROC services, we can put you in contact with one of our clients.

ADDITIONAL NDCPD SERVICES

Level 1 Editing:  Level 1 Editing checks and corrects the transcript for basic errors (spelling, un-translates, etc.).

Level 2 Editing:  Level 2 Editing provides the services involved in Level I and more. It adds checks (i.e., grammatical) necessary to render the transcript basically a "letter perfect" document.

Technical Support:  Technical support is available for software and hardware. Most (technical assistance related to initial set-up, trouble-shooting) is available at no charge. Additional technical support (such as scheduled conference calls, and additional training) is available at a reasonable rate.

Event Monitoring:  Event Monitoring is the practice of making a person available after regular working hours to monitor the status of an event and the server being used. This service is charged at the "Technical Support" rate.
